What Is Balanced Dog Training?
By Chad Singer, Canine Revolution Dog Training
Balanced dog training means using all four quadrants of operant conditioning instead of one.
Let’s take the jargon out. Positive means you’re adding something. Negative means you’re removing something. Neither word is emotional, Skinner just picked terms that sound scary. Reinforcement means the behavior gets more likely. Punishment means it gets less likely. That’s the whole vocabulary.
A positive-only trainer is claiming one quadrant. An e-collar-only or leash-only trainer, properly called escape and avoidance training, is working out of two. A balanced trainer has the whole toolbox, so when one approach doesn’t fit the dog in front of them, they’ve got somewhere else to go.
The order matters. Build the behavior with food. Confirm the dog genuinely knows it. Teach what a correction is and how to respond to it. Then hold the dog accountable. You don’t correct a dog into knowing something.
