Transcript:
Chad: Welcome to pack Talk podcast episode 121 today we’re going to be talking about how to exercise your dog and of course when we’re talking about exercising our dog we’re going to have to talk about exercising ourselves right because we know the dog is a reflection of the owner.
Ben: Yeah see what I’m saying mhm.
Chad: Also we’re going to talk about Dog Health and Wellness just overall so kind of an all-encompassing topic but we know that exercise is extremely important for dogs as it is with ourselves and we know that exercise is a part of our overall health and wellness for our dog and for ourself so there’s a lot of great ways that you can provide exercise to your dog and yourself and a lot of times they’re intertwined.
Ben: Yeah as we’ll talk about.
Chad: But for me specifically based on what I’ve learned up to this point and you know the things that I take into account I like to break down health and exercise for our dogs into a couple segments and I want to discuss those segments today so first we’ve got cardiovascular conditioning we’ve got Mobility flexibility.
Ben: Yep.
Chad: We’ve got muscular conditioning or and max heart rate so bringing our heart rate up we’ve got uh conditioning for specific events like Ben here he’s going to be running a 5k soon so he’s been conditioning himself for a 5k.
Ben: Yeah training hard.
Chad: And then we got a mental exercise which which is a big part of overall exercise but we don’t talk about that that much in the dog Community then we’ve got other health related considerations so these are the different segments I’m going to break down and uh discuss with you guys today if you want to skip to a certain section put uh go down to the show notes and just click on the section you want to listen to it should have the Tim stamp on there so first we’ve got cardiovascular conditioning for dogs so this is probably one of the most underrated forms of exercise for us and our dogs and that’s going to be walking when you think of walking you might not think of it as cardiovascular conditioning so that’s what the goal is of our walking and we know that walking is phenomenal both dogs and US humans our bodies were designed to move and walking does that for us uh what a brisk walk will do for us and you know we could do it in as short as 10 minutes that’s going to help us improve insulin sensitivity it’s going to decrease gas who has a gassy dog you know a gassy dog I mean I got two of them buddy we were just going out to a distraction work last night one of the dogs was farting on the way there you know but uh walking will help decrease gas it’s going to help improve digestion walking is going to decrease delayed onset muscle soreness so you think of that from a human perspective you lift weights.
Ben: Yeah you you know the next day you’re you’re kind of sore right if you lift it effectively right.
Chad: Uh walking is going to help aid us in recovery it’s going to help us improve blood flow throughout the body and the blood is what is pushing nutrients throughout your body whether you’re a dog or a cat or a human you know our cat podcast is still one of our top five podcasts based on the listener shout out to our feline right so you know that blood flow it’s pushing nutrients throughout your body so once you eat food right your body is digesting that food it’s taking in those nutrients getting your blood flow going is what’s going to help push those nutrients around your body to where they need to get to okay so walking good to go bottom line.
Ben: Yeah good for you.
Chad: And uh I have asked multiple veterinarians the specific question how does walking translate to dogs how does it improve dog cardiovascular and simply put they state that walking most likely has the same effects in dogs as it does in humans which is all the benefits we talked about just a second ago so you know your dog can have muscle soreness too if you have a really hard day maybe you’re playing fetch maybe the dog’s doing a lot of swimming a lot of running playing whatever that dog can have sore muscles too.
Ben: Yeah right.
Chad: So walking helps again get those nutrients out get that blood flow going reduces the delayed onset muscle soreness okay just as an example yeah so we know that the walk for humans and dogs is going to be the bonding process when you walk with your dog obviously you’re bonding your dogs bonding to you because you guys are kind of having some experiences together.
Ben: Yeah.
Chad: So I bring all this up because the walk should be the foundation for your exercise your health your Wellness for your dogs and it’s benefiting us at the same time so two for one right two birds one stone.
Ben: H yeah but let’s not take I’m I’m on board.
Chad: Well let’s not take out any birds you know that phrase two birds one stone why would you why would you throw stones at Birds coming from a bird guy I’m a bird guy right.
Ben: Yeah.
Chad: So uh my recommendation for walking try to get about an hour per day with your dog you could break this up into into like 30 minute walks one in the morning one in the evening but in an Ideal World my personal opinion based on the phds the doctors and all that that I’ve talked to that I listen to brisk walk after your meals are going to be more beneficial for you so if we feed our dogs twice a day once in the morning once in the evening then we walk 20 minutes after each meal that puts us around 40 minutes total for that day if we’re just doing our dogs meals right I also recommend that you walk briskly after your meals whether your dogs’s with you or not so if you go work in an office obviously you’re your dog may be with you but it might not be most likely not.
Ben: Yeah.
Chad: But but uh let’s say your dog’s not with you when you’re at your office you eat lunch at the office after your lunch take a quick 10 20 minute walk briskly that’s going to help you’re going to feel it when you get back to your station you know you eat that lunch you come back you sit down you’re feeling your you’re feeling your lunch.
Ben: Oh that sleepy spell exactly.
Chad: So uh you know try that out me personally you know when I like for my dogs feeding I feed my dogs right before I eat my own breakfast and my dogs eat a lot faster than I do so I put their food down they eat it in like a minute now I’m eating that takes me maybe 20 minutes so that gives my dog the ability to like rest settle their food for 20 minutes then we go on our walk and I do want to point out don’t go do intense exercise after a meal with your dog because you don’t want your dog to have a risk of bloating so it should be a moderate or a brisk walk not intensive exercise right after a meal I want to make that clear but also I believe in resting your dog for a period of time right after they eat so if they eat 20 minutes of rest now you do your walk right.
Ben: Yeah.
Chad: So the walk tackles our first priority of cardiovascular conditioning for us and our dogs so just go the bonding part of cardiovascular conditioning is going to be just going on walks together the dog gets to experience with you you guys get to just kind of chill out you know the Simplicity of the human dog bond so walk then we’ve got our muscular conditioning so we’ve got this phase like I talked about earlier cardiovascular now muscle right so this is going to come in a form of playing fetch so fetch is phenomenal for dogs that also improves their explosiveness it improves their agility it improves their endurance so you can also use your fetch session as mental conditioning if you use commands and you use obedience during the fetch but what playing fetch is going to do for us as the handler it’s going to allow us to give our dog tons of exercise without having to put in a lot of physical work for ourselves so that’s one of the benefits of playing fetch with your dog cuz look at it our dog just exploded 50 yards we just threw a frisbee yeah so who got more of a workout the dog so we don’t have to get all of our exercise done with our dogs and all of our dog’s exercise done with us we can supplement some things like fetch okay however uh I know you know Ben is training for a 5k so one of the things that we can do for uh muscular conditioning is we can run with our dogs you do need to be careful with puppies because we don’t want to put too much stress on those young joints and all that stuff but you know when you’re doing these runs and you’re building up your endurance for example Ben’s building his endurance for a 5K you’re running with your dog you guys are getting exercise at the same time right so your dog gets to go on a run with you we’ve mentioned in previous episodes even bringing your dog to the gym so you bring your dog to the gym you attach them to like some sort of wall anchor or they’ve got their bed in the corner you go do your exercise your dog hangs out there with you after your training session maybe you got a quick dog session in you guys go home so that’s like muscular conditioning for yourself and your dog so we’ve also got swimming now I don’t recommend you take your dog swimming and leave it at that you know for your health and your wellness you still got to walk you still need to do all the other cardiovascular stuff your muscle conditioning because a lot of times I see people they’ve got a pool and they’re like yeah I don’t need to walk my dog because I have my dog swim in the pool every day look I’m a huge fan of swimming for your dogs I’m a huge fan of swimming for yourself from personal experience my dogs love swimming every day if they could but that’s not the only thing they’re doing I still train my dogs every day I still walk my dogs every day I still play fetch with my dogs every day so it’s not like you can just swim and be like oh yeah I got my exercise done for the day so swimming is phenomenal for dogs especially dogs that have joint problems like hip dysplasia swimming is great for them you’re going to have muscular conditioning in the water it’s less stress on those joints so that’s a great thing to do for your dogs okay now we’ve got the cardiovascular with with the walks now we got muscle conditioning which can also be combined in the same activity maybe you’re running with your dog that’s cardiovascular and muscle at the same time so now we’ve got Mobility and flexibility now this is going to be one of the more overlooked ones and it’s a big deal so we as humans know how important stretching is most of us do it most of us don’t actually some people don’t do it it’s very important cuz it helps recover us it helps heal us helps heal our muscles helps stretch them out our bodies are designed to move and uh stretch but the question is how can we do this with our dogs because obviously our dogs they’re not doing stretching on their own you got to incorporate it for them what do we do about it so what I recommend for our dogs is that we massage our dogs so we could do quick little massage sessions you can go so let’s say your dog is laying down you can go right up the spine on the left and right side and just kind of go down each side of the spine rub your hands in there move them around right there all the way down you can rub along your dog’s chest you can start going into the shoulders you can do the the shoulders the hips that’s you know where we have all that muscle and connective tissue is and all that so you know you can go up and down their legs you know going from the paw up to the armpit right up down all those things you can get videos on YouTube about massaging your dog but if you’re just sitting down there with your dog and you’re giving your dog a good massage you know just thinking of all those joints rubs in circular motions you can go along the outer part of those legs the inner thighs you know going up the back legs up the front legs stretching them out stretching them out so you can actually massage them and stretch them at the same time pull their legs out a little bit fully extended just go up and down massage that entire surface area another thing you can do as far as stretching goes if you’re you’re being creative in your play with your dog if your dog’s tugging tugging is actually phenomenal for your dog especially if you got your dog in a bite and you’re rotating the tug left and right pulling the dog different directions and then when the dog pulls you’re moving with it right so there’s all these Dynamic Movements that are actually helping stretch your dog and build muscle because you’re moving your dog through space so if you’re doing tug with your dog and your dog’s just attached to the tug right you’re not actually pulling on the tug you’re moving the tug through space almost as if like you’re swimming with the tug well in order for your dog to move that tug with you they got to run right they got to work their own muscles through that full range of motion so playing tug is phenomenal another thing you can do I just thought of is uh depending on the size of your dog but you can get your dog into to a sit and you can kind of maybe take your dog’s front paws and you can go up into a beg position if your dog’s comfortable with that right so your dog’s sitting going into a beg you’re taking their paws you’re lifting them up into a beg okay now you’re stretching them and then you can even go even further a smaller dog up into a bipod so your dog’s like standing on their back legs it’s another form of conditioning right if your dog knows tricks like roll over you guys are playing around you’re making them roll over it’s kind of getting them to kind of move a little bit more than they normally are if your dog’s in the sit and you’re making them lay down and stand and sit and lay sit stand right lay sit lay you know you’re doing all those things your dog is moving their body through space and they’re getting that flexibility work in right so there’s all these creative ways you can do it but massage is going to be like the most practical way of getting your dog to stretch is through massage and we should be massaging our dogs you should be massaging our dogs so there’s a lot of benefits with massage better blood flow recovery all that stuff that goes along with massage we should be doing it for ourselves too obviously I’m a huge fan of my massage gun I got the hyper ice massage gun I use it all the time we should be getting massages so I try to do at least once a week I’m doing a full body massage on my dog and then uh throughout the week when we’re just chilling out like on the couch I’ll you know just be chilling with my dog just massaging my dog and Bane’s like this close to me he’s like right here I can I could just reach out and rub Bane and he’s massaging him I’m massaging myself with the with the massage gun right so just take care of yourselves man Mobility and flexibility is very important then we’ve got our Max Heart Rate Activities so this is high intensity interval training it’s super important for us as humans as dogs we need to like go from a baseline heart rate and just crank our heart rate all the way up and then bring it back down and this this can all be done in a variety of ways one of the ways we can do this is maybe a sport so my dog Bane he trains for IGP so that’s IGP is Schutzhund it’s protection sport there’s three phases obedience tracking and protection so when Bane’s going through protection training his adrenaline goes through the roof cuz he loves it it’s his favorite thing right he’s doing that he’s running he’s biting the sleeve his heart rate is up his adrenaline he’s feeling good he’s doing the thing he was bred to do he gets to engage in it in a safe controlled you know sport element right so he gets to really push his heart rate really high okay but he also gets to go from doing that pushing his heart rate all the way up and then after we’re done with our little exercise we’re now transitioning out of that and we’re doing calm work right we’re bringing our dog back into like this homeostasis Baseline and so we’re like hey got your heart rate really high now bring your heart rate down and by doing that you guys are are actually exercising your nervous system which a lot of people don’t think about you know cuz you’ve got your fight ORF flight you got your parasympathetic nervous systems so you’re training your nervous system to be able to transition smoothly and efficiently in and out of these things another way you can do this besides Sports is you can just play with your dog or you you know you’re in the yard you’re tossing a ball for your dog you’re chasing your dog your dog’s chasing you maybe you’re wrestling with your dog and then you guys take a break right so you got your dog’s heart rate up your heart rate’s up and now you guys take a break you guys sit there for a minute you guys regain your composure get some water right now you go and you do it again or as I mentioned earlier with the tug so you’re playing tug with your dog dog’s biting on the tug you’re pulling the dog around the yard you’re like swinging the dog around the dog’s just locked onto the tug right you’re doing sprints across the yard your dog’s on the tug right it’s all these dynamic movements now you stop you let go of the tug the dog drops the tug now you guys take a break 30 seconds to a minute later you start over that’s how you do the high intensity interval training and this is super important for us as humans as well I mean look Ben’s train for a 5K he’s getting his cardiovascular endurance but you know Ben’s also in the gym Ben trains jitsu he does all the high intensity interval training as well because we also need that right so we need to bring our own heart rate up and down and we can train this with our dogs so back to the tug you’re playing tug with your dog I guarantee you if you’re playing tug for 2 to 3 minutes you’re going to feel winded a little bit right if you’re not then you ain’t playing rough enough right so you play tug for 2 to 3 minutes you take a break 30 to 60 seconds you start it over again all right boom now you just got a little workout done right two for one because you’re doing high intensity interval training with your dog at the same time or fetch fetch with your dog you’re going to walk to the edge of your property and you’re like we’re going to do fetch now and your dog’s like get ready I’m going to throw this ball all the way across to the other side and your dog’s like yeah I’m ready they get all excited you throw that ball boom your dog’s running you start sprinting after your dog that’s not what you’re supposed to do you just threw the ball your dog went there you Chase the dog and so your dog’s chasing the ball you’re chasing the dog as soon as your dog picks up the ball you Sprint back to the start point right so your dog is now trying to chase you with the ball and you start all over and you do that 10 times right so you’re chasing your dog and sprinting back and forth you’re doing high intensity interval training 2 for one all right so there’s so many ways you can do this so cardiovascular with your dog muscular conditioning with your dog high intensity interval training with your dog flexibility Mobility all those things you know you can set your dog on a k9 fit bone right you got the the K9 fit bones you got the peanuts so K9 fit bones they make dog equipment right you can set your dog on a k9 fit bone or a peanut and you can kind of work them you know on that k9 fit bone and or peanut which is kind of working their their joints you know a little bit like their balance flexibility joint stabilization and all this you can also get your dog on an underwater treadmill so that combines muscle cardiovascular and that flexibility right because they’re moving their joints on the underwater treadmill in the water the water has resistance so they’re moving through the resistance which is giving them the muscle and they’re doing it over a period of time it’s like 30 minutes right so you got the cardiovascular in there so now we’re combining things right what else is there you know there’s there’s swimming there’s playing fetch there’s tug we’ve got Sports you know so a lot of this stuff combines uh almost all the things we’ve talked about you know your cardiovascular your muscle your high intensity interval training into one because maybe you’re playing fetch but you’re sprinting with your dog right so now you got cardio cuz you just did 10 reps of fetch maybe you just did I don’t know 15 minutes of of fetch okay if you’re doing 15 minutes of fetch with your dog that’s good cardiovascular if you’re adding in sprints while you’re playing fetch with your dog that’s high intensity interval training as well as muscular conditioning okay so a lot of those stuff can be combined all right or one other thing you can do is if your dog’s doing like scent detection work or maybe they do search and rescue so your dog’s outside maybe a couple hours searching for a scent okay so your dog’s doing cardiovascular by going through the field searching right they’re getting like the cardiovascular they’re walking they’re running at a moderate Pace but they’re also getting the mental stimulation from searching the field looking for the scent right so these things like cross over so by fulfilling these needs and these categories you’re fulfilling multiple needs with one exercise and that’s the goal we’re trying to maximize our time efficiency so because maybe you only got an hour to train your dog today okay well let’s make the most of that hour and if you can maximize multiple categories at once within that hour that’s where you want to be so I’m going to move on to mental exercise which I mentioned before so we don’t talk about this much for our dogs but mental exercise is super important and it’s a big part of the overall health right so scent work that’s a great activity you can do with your dog now your dog’s using their nose their brain you’re building confidence in your dog right you’re building a relationship with your dog because you guys are doing things together right the dog’s working its brain the dog can think you can see your dog working things out it’s all fun and then uh you know physical exercise is one thing but for me personal opinion the mental exercise is like what completes everything because even with the physical exercise a big part of the physical exercise for my dogs is combined with their training because I believe a big part of dog training is your relationship and a big part of your relationship with your dog is done by doing things together right and all of these exercises that we’ve been talking about to day with our dogs is allowing us to do things with our dogs right we’re doing these exercises together so we’re building relationship so scent work is a big one but also things like puzzles you know you can get puzzles for your dog you put the treats into the puzzle your dog’s got to use their brain to get the treat out of the puzzle right that’s a form of mental stimulation or even your dog training itself so when I’m training my dogs you know you got two dogs out there now I got Bane and Georgia Bane’s doing IGP so he’s a level one IGP titlist he’s working towards his level two I also got Georgia and Georgia she’s getting her canine good citizen then she’s going to start working towards her herding instinct tested certificate and her Community canine right so these things are mental stimulation for my dogs you know I’m also training these dogs for like facility dog programs and service dog programs so you know these training activities there’s physical components to it and there’s mental components to it so it’s all intertwined but the mental stimulation side you know when my dog is learning a new thing or we’re working on advancing a certain behavior that is mental exercise for them that is taxing on my dogs so you’ll see my dogs maybe I’m training my dogs for 30 minutes on a new skill or we’re advancing a skill we’re working on proofing something whatever you know I’ll be out there training Bane you know doing something I come home maybe I let them relax for like 30 minutes to an hour well Georgia needs to go out and now we we’re doing Georgia’s training Georgia my pit so you know we’ll go out there 30 minutes maybe 30 minutes to an hour whatever that time frame is after I’m done training Georgia right you know I come in I come inside I let the dogs out for a second they go potty I bring them back inside they’re just crashed out they’re sleeping on the floor and I didn’t even do anything that physical yeah but they’re exhausted they’re sleeping because I worked their brain and when you’re working your dog’s brain it’s also releasing neurotransmitters man dopamine all these good things for your dog so your dog’s feeling good it’s super important for your dog so another thing you can do is like you can take your dogs to new places and explore a new environment with them you know take them to a different city you know take them out to explore you know just take them somewhere different maybe you’re hanging out at the at the uh Beach you know or whatever you’re hiking you know a new place anything so anytime your dog’s experiencing something new they’re using their brain they’re like what’s going on it’s new right so they’re processing they’re taking in new information so that is mental stimulation for your dog and it does take effort from your dog’s body they’re they’re using their brain so I highly recommend it so much so that I recommend you spend at least 30 minutes a day you know working your dog’s brain whether that’s through a puzzle whether that’s through training whether that’s through exploring new places obviously certain breeds are going to need more than others so German Shepherds border collies like these dogs are going to need more but 30 minutes at minimum for your dogs mental stimulation and it’s very important so you guys take care of your dogs take care of your physical you know your cardiovascular your muscle your Max heart rate your Mobility your flexibility and also your brain your mental all right so now let’s move on to other Health considerations so you want to keep your dog lean now we don’t want our dog obese obviously but also we don’t want our dog too skinny either we want them you know everything in moderation but I also like to try to keep my dogs a little bit leaner rather than a little bit heavier because we know that obesity causes a lot of problems with us as well as our dogs right but extra weight can put extra strain on our joints extra strain on our organs so you know and then uh especially for dogs like with the hips because dogs walk on all fours when they got those extra pounds on them every time they take a step that that weight gets translated into those hips so dogs that have hip dysplasia it’s very important to keep them lean so that you’re not putting extra stress on those hips right so that’s something that we could talk about so I like to try to keep my dogs at a a nice lean weight a healthy lean weight you know we’ve had our problems with keeping weight on Bane because Bane was so active so there’s two extremes you get dogs that are a little chubby and you want to keep them lean or you got a dog like mine specifically Bane where I could not keep weight on him and so it was something I was actively working at it and finally what got me to turn a corner was a couple things number one I started using supplements so I use K9 Super Supplements the the the weight gainer that they got the bulk now I’m also feeding my dog the raw diet so my dog’s on the raw diet uh I add the K9 super supplements and then I drizzle some bone broth over the food and Bane has gained a good amount of weight now now he’s looking good I felt like right before this change I was like man Bane’s getting thin and now ever since I started using the weight gainer now he’s finally starting to fill out gain weight looking good so I wanted to throw that in there so for your dog whether they got to lose weight or gain weight do what you can to keep them at a healthy healthy weight we also got to watch out for for injuries whether they’re acute or chronic we got to watch out for dog injuries we need to also manage these injuries um I want to keep my eye on what’s happening with my dog specifically you know my dog Georgia she has a torn meniscus in her leg she also has she tore her ACL too so Georgia’s 4 years old young pit very active she uh she she tore her ACL and her meniscus in the same leg while running outside and I remember the day it happened I was playing with her outside she was running full speed she hopped over something she landed on it wrong and I and I heard her Yelp as soon as she yelped I pulled her inside I knew like ah she just hurt her leg she’s limping so I pulled her inside I was like all right we’re done we’re good we’re taking a break but I don’t know what it was you know it’ll be fine it’ll probably just get better well it didn’t get better so I took her to the vet she got the surgery she had a TPLO surgery they repaired her knee they repaired her meniscus and then she also has hip dysplasia so my pit has all this stuff going on with her joints now I tried to make her a little more muscular to help with her joints I’m giving her those K9 super supplements the joint support because it’s got the glucosamine and the condrotin and all that stuff in it right so I’m managing her health in that regard I still walk her every day I still train her every day I do a lot of the underwater treadmill for her because it’s low impact on those joints so I’m watching out for injuries I have to be cautious with Georgia so when I’m running around you know chasing the dogs around the yard playing with them I’m cautious with Georgia I try not to do any crazy like sharp movements with her you know cutting left and right real hard and I make sure she has appropriate rest time if she’s like hey we’re going to go walk you know you guys got to rest rest your leg a little bit we’ll go in a second so so you got to kind of watch out for injuries manage the injuries maybe visit a chiropractor for your dog there’s canine chiropractors they can like kind of help adjust the body and all that stuff so you know as your dog gets older you also might want to take them to a chiropractor too because maybe your dog’s spine isn’t aligned properly you know your dog’s joint might not be aligned properly so there’s canine chiropractors out there you can check that out as well but we also need to take care of ourselves we need to watch out for our own injuries you know maybe we got a bad knee maybe we got a bad back like take care of yourself you know when you’re exercising don’t overdo it you know do what’s appropriate for you and your situation I’ve thrown out my lower back deadlifting before because I tried to go too heavy too much volume I didn’t you know wasn’t using the best technique you know and so I threw out my lower back and you know so I’ve had to uh rehab that back into health you know and that’s a process you know and sometimes you have to just take a step back you have to rest you have to recover I got a dog that got injured you know Georgia she tore her her knee she had to rehab had to recover we had to take it easy had to give her time like sometimes we got to give ourselves time yeah right so watch out for injuries manage them appropriately seek uh a professional if necessary you might need to go to a chiropractor maybe you got to go to physical therapy right maybe you need to take your dog to the vet maybe you need to get surgery on your dog or surgery on yourself right so pay attention to your injuries manage them accordingly do what you can to avoid preventable injuries but when the preventable when the injury does happen uh manage that appropriately all right so then we’ve got our food I touched on this a little bit but uh I am pro raw for dogs that’s where I’m at you know I know people like kibble I know some some people can’t afford Raw or some people think they can’t afford raw and they don’t want to go through the process of trying to Source uh Raw economically so I get it you know I got a buddy Brandon he’s got three German Shepherds so he spends a significant amount of money feeding his dogs raw because he’s got three German Shepherds big German Shepherds right so he’s also training them in protection sports right so they burn a lot of calories so they got to eat a lot right so he spends like I think like what like 900 bucks a month on food for his dogs yeah so for some people that’s that’s like that’s their rent right but for him he’s working to make it happen right so his dogs are performing and they’re doing well you know for me specifically the raw diet my dogs are performing very well on a raw diet I like what the raw diet is doing for my dogs and you know I also have to talk about like you know my dog Bane’s breed you know German Shepherds and Belgian man wa are prone to DCM dialated cardiomyopathy which is a you know basically an enlarged heart um the heart doesn’t function as efficiently and so there’s been linked with kibble there’s been the you know boutique exotic and grain-free diet so BG diets exotic proteins grain free um you know there’s been some correlation with these diets and DCM um they don’t know exactly why you know there’s some speculation it has to do with peas and legumes and lentils um they were thinking at one point maybe it’s taurine deficiency maybe it’s something else they’re not 100% sure but you know we know there is some sort of correlation between the boutique exotic and grain-free diets and DCM now I don’t feed any of that to my dogs my dogs are on raw and so my dog Bane he’s five years old so during his lifetime up to like 3 and 1/2 years old three years old I had him on kibble and a lot of those foods that I fed him earlier in his life he was eating those boutique you know exotic and grain-free type foods well I had him on those for a while then I transitioned him to like Blue Buffalo which is you know not a boutique exotic and grain-free diet right and then I transitioned Bane to raw he’s been on raw for over a year now and uh I got to tell you I love what the raw is doing to my dog I recently went to the cardiologist for Bane just to make sure his heart is good because his breed is prone to this and because he was on the foods that have had the correlation to it so you know I went in there they did the echocardiogram on him they checked him checked his heart out uh the cardiologist came back and said he’s 100% good to go his heart is perfect he said you keep doing what you’re doing he said whatever you’re doing is working phenomenally well so at this point Bane is on the raw uh I’m giving him the K9 super supplements um he’s you know he’s eating bone broth all that and he is looking phenomenal now Georgia she doesn’t have the same breed specific uh diet or breed specific health concern about DCM so she’s on you know 50% raw 50% kibble so she gets a little bit of both and she’s also doing well so for me raw is the way to go but if you’re on kibble I you know that’s fine just make sure you’re not doing the boutique exotic grain-free diet if you are on kibble I’d also suggest getting some bone broth adding it to your food I’d also recommend adding in supplements from K9 Super Supplements or some other source make sure you’re supplementing because when you think of what you’re eating right you know they say hey make sure you got a variety of food a variety of colors a variety of nutrients and all that because we want to make sure we’re covering all the bases but if we’re only eating kibble are we covering all the bases maybe but I’m going to go ahead and add supplements in there because I’d rather be safe than sorry you know especially with the health of my dogs so that’s me right there you know I add in the supplements but there’s all kinds of different food options out there so raw there’s Freeze Dry raw you’ve also got like dehydrated food like the honest kitchen and stuff like that you got fresh food I’ve tried nom nom before you know you’ve got kibble there’s like wet food all kinds of different options out there so you know at the end of the day it’s up to you and what you’re able to manage what you’re able to afford all that but find what works good for you so whether you’re you know if you’re on kibble awesome you know just be cautious about you know those B boutique exotic grain-free diets just as a precaution if you got a question ask your veterinarian but at the same time I also want to say ask your veterinarian but be careful with your vet because some vets are very pro one brand of food that they sell in their office and they’re saying this is the only food you should feed your dog and also here’s a prescription for a urinary diet right that cost $100 a month and you know there there’s been a whole thing with Hills um Science Diet um Hills was one of the original Science Diet companies and they started developing relationships with vet schools you know in the 70s 80s um and a lot of what vets learn in vet school comes from um Hills nutrition program you know information right but you got to think that this is a corporation that’s trying to make money so they’re teaching these vets about their products so I say this to say find what works good for your dog trust your vet but also make sure that your vet is not just pushing a brand onto you because they’re making money off of it so that goes along with that but yeah just find what works good for you you know I transitioned over the years I’ve I bounced around from all different foods you know I was on you know Purina when I first started and then I went over to um you know Fromm and then I was on like Orion and then I was on Blue Buffalo now I’m on raw so you can transition as long as you transition correctly but find what works for you so now I want to talk about our sponsors so hit them up support them you know our first sponsor is Rogue Origins so what I like about Rogue Origins you got red light therapy devices they got some supplements they got the liapin which is the liapin is a red light therapy it’s a belt or you could call it a pad really that you just wrap around yourself and it gives you the red light therapy specifically targeted at the problem area so for me one of my problem areas has always been my lower back because I’ve thrown it out before you know just overworking it at the gym sometimes I strain it training my dogs or whatever so I’ll put that red light therapy device on my lower back I chill maybe watch some TV or you know I’m out in the garage maybe I’m you know filing a knife or something like that so I’m doing something with my hands while I got the liy pin on you know my lower back it’s strapped on there it’s mobile I can move around with it and it’s giving me the red light therapy which has been shown to improve a lot of things with us blood flow recovery healing all that stuff very cool you know red light therapy is powerful you can actually use it on your dogs as well so I Chad: So instead of one serving every day I took two servings one in the morning one in the evening so I just in my blood work we’ll see if it helped me or not if it didn’t help me I’m going to go back to one serving a day because that’s one of the things that helped me get my testosterone good to go because several years ago when I first got on the blood work uh my testosterone wasn’t looking good it was low and so there’s a couple things I had to do number one improve my sleep cuz I was getting 6 hours of sleep back then.
Ben: Like what you’re saying be me like what you’re saying.
Chad: So I went up to 7 to n hours of sleep a night I improved my uh nutrition I went straight vertical diet not going to go off on a tangent but vertical diet that’s what you need to be on but vertical diet low lower in uh saturated fats right so I was eating a lot of saturated fat boom adjusted to Vertical diet and then I took the Joo fuel testosterone Optimizer my testosterone boom skyrocketed dude came up to Great numbers doctor my doctor was super excited he saw my blood results he’s like holy Cal dude you did it you brought it up like he was freaking amp specimen right he’s like you’re a specimen I’m like hell yeah right.
Ben: Yeah.
Chad: So anyway that was a couple years ago so this time you know my last blood work I did I’m still good so this time I’m like you know what what happens if I increase the Joo fuel testosterone Optimizer to two servings a day so we’re going to see we’ll find out I’ll give you the feedback.
